As I may have mentioned maybe a dozen times or so. My most favourite show growing up was Zzzap! The CITV slapstick comedy about a comic which had come to life. The show ran for 10 series and has become something of a cult show since the last edition aired in 2001.
For those with fuzzy memories, it was a slapstick comedy show featuring the adventures of a series of crazy characters. It was designed to look like you were reading a comic, with cartoon captions on screen. There was no spoken word, only cartoony sound effects.
The characters over the series were...
Cuthbert Lilly - Richard Waites (All Series)
A clumsy, buffoonish, Mr Bean style character who caused havoc no matter where he went.
Smart Arty - Neil Buchanan (Series 1-7)
Neil Buchanan's alter ego, a stereotypical french artist with beret, curly moustache and artists smock. In the first series Smart Arty would create pictures out of various items (basically a carbon copy of the Big Art Attack's). In following series, Arty would have a magic pen where everything he drew came to life.
The Handymen - Sarah Pickthall (All Series)
Probably the most surreal part of the show. A pair of levitating hands that performed in a theatre made of an audience of clapping hands! The Handymen would demonstrate things you can make and do at home.
Tricky Dicky - Richard Waites (Series 1)
A mysterious private eye detective character whose face was never seen. Tricky would set challenges for a group of children to complete. Something easy such as pouring custard on a pudding, but there'd always be a twist. The custard is in a wheelbarrow and the pudding is at the end of an assault course for instance.
Daisy Dares - Deborah McCallum (Series 2-8) and Claire Macaulay (Series 9 and 10)
Replaced Tricky Dicky from Series 2 onwards but with the same format. Setting tricky challenges for children. Often involving lots of gunge.
Minnie the Mini Magician - Sophie Aldred (Series 8-10)
Minnie was a learner magician who could never get her spells right.
In-between sketches there were numerous puzzles added from the second series on wards...
Question Mark (Series 2-10)
A close up or distorted image would be displayed. You had ten seconds to guess what the object was as the picture slowly came back in to focus
Spot The Difference (Series 8-10)
Self explanatory really...
Dot to Dot (Series 8-10)
Again, self explanatory.
Eyes (Series 8-10)
Similar to the Question Mark. You had ten seconds to guess an image of a hidden animal.
Magnifying Glass (Series 10)
A Dingbats style puzzle.
End Credits Puzzle (Series 10)
During the end credits. A number of the same object had been hidden in a picture. The puzzle was to find all the objects before the credits finished.
Numerous episodes have appeared online and there's many fan pages dedicated to the show dotted about too. However, the one thing that's been lacking is a full and accurate episode guide. Yes there is one on Wikipedia, but like everything on Wikipedia it's subject to frequent vandalism. Numerous times I've edited the article to put correct episode descriptions in, only for them to be messed up again within days. It's also certainly not complete or accurate, a lot of the sketches described simply didn't happen and we've discovered later, a lot of episodes are not in the correct order.
This is as best as a complete guide that could be done. The episodes are in correct order and to the best of our knowledge the broadcast dates are correct too. Only original broadcast dates are listed, repeats have not been counted. This guide lists all the regular episodes, as well as the Summer, Autumn and Christmas Specials as well as the one off special 'Cuthbert's Diary'.
I can't really take much credit for this apart from hosting it and laying it out. I have to thank two people (who shall remain anonymous) who have access to far better resources than I have to make this possible.
